Abstract

Introduction: The use of medications during pregnancy requires caution, as several substances can cross the placenta and interfere with fetal development. Understanding these risks is essential to ensure maternal–fetal safety. Objective: To analyze fetal complications associated with the use of medications during pregnancy. Methodology: An integrative review conducted in the LILACS and BDENF databases through the Virtual Health Library (BVS) and PubMed. After the search process and application of eligibility criteria, six primary studies were included in the analysis. Results: The results indicated that analgesics such as paracetamol and tramadol presented a low risk of malformations when used under medical prescription. In contrast, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), opioids, and some antidepressants, such as paroxetine, were associated with cardiac defects, cleft palate, and other congenital anomalies. Conclusion: It is concluded that fetal risk associated with medication use during pregnancy varies according to the pharmacological class, dosage, and gestational period of exposure. Although some drugs present a relatively favorable safety profile, certain classes may be associated with specific malformations, reinforcing the importance of careful risk–benefit assessment and professional monitoring.
