Abstract

This review is based on the assumption that the work School institutions: why and how to research is a starting point for reflection, research and writing the history of educational institutions. A very necessary type of research, notably in Brazil. One of the objectives of this review is to show the trajectory that triggered the publication of this work. The authors' concern with highlighting answers to two dilemmas that precede the writing of studies in the area will also be presented. The first dilemma concerns the presumption of the importance of studying the processes of historical constitution of school institutions. The second dilemma concerns the choice of the object to be researched and the theoretical methodological procedures adopted when outlining the fundamentals on “how to research” the history of institutions.
